The Sunken City of Letharion

The Sunken City of Letharion is an ancient, submerged metropolis lying deep beneath the coastal waters of Eltheris. Once a thriving hub of commerce and magic, the city was engulfed by the sea centuries ago after a cataclysmic event tied to unstable magic. Now, during an unusually dry and hot summer, parts of Letharion have begun to resurface, revealing long-lost ruins, treasure, and powerful magic. However, the return of the Sunken City has also stirred something darker, as dimensional rifts have started appearing beneath the waters, drawing the attention of powerful factions and adventurers.

Current Struggles

  1. Dimensional Rifts Beneath the Sea: Like the Frozen North and the Blooming Forest, the Sunken City is experiencing the effects of the unstable Nexus Gate. Dimensional rifts are appearing beneath the ocean, causing strange creatures from other realms to emerge. These rifts have also created dangerous magical disturbances, making exploration treacherous for those seeking the city’s treasures.

  2. The Curse of Letharion: The city’s sinking is rumored to have been caused by a powerful curse placed on the ruling family centuries ago. Now that parts of the city have resurfaced, the curse has reawakened, unleashing vengeful spirits and cursed artifacts. Explorers who venture too deep into the ruins risk falling victim to the same fate that befell the city.

  3. The Struggle for Power: As the Sunken City resurfaces, powerful factions have descended upon the ruins to claim its treasures and ancient magic. The Riftwalkers seek to study the dimensional rifts, while other groups are more interested in harnessing the power of Letharion’s forgotten magic. Conflicts between these factions are intensifying, and the waters around the city have become a battleground.

Important Figures

  1. Dorian Thorne – The Seeker of Depths

    • Dorian Thorne is the brother of Elder Faelar Thorne, the Guardian of the Blooming Forest. Unlike his brother, Dorian is an adventurer and scholar, drawn to the mysteries of the deep.

    • He has dedicated his life to uncovering the secrets of the Sunken City, believing that its ancient magic holds the key to understanding the dimensional rifts.

    • While Faelar is focused on protecting the natural world, Dorian is obsessed with knowledge and is willing to take greater risks to unlock the city’s hidden power.

  2. Captain Isolde Darktide – Leader of the Scavenger Fleet

    • Captain Isolde is the leader of a notorious band of treasure hunters known as the Scavenger Fleet.

    • Ruthless and cunning, she has her eyes set on the treasures of Letharion and will stop at nothing to claim them.

    • Isolde’s fleet is skilled at navigating the dangerous waters around the city, and she is not above using piracy to get what she wants. Her main competition comes from the Riftwalkers and other factions seeking to control the Sunken City.

Factions of the Sunken City

  1. The Riftwalkers (Dimensional Explorers)

    • The Riftwalkers, already established in both the Frozen North and the Blooming Forest, have now set up an operation near the Sunken City. They are particularly interested in the dimensional rifts that have begun opening beneath the sea, as well as the ancient magic that once powered Letharion. While the Riftwalkers are primarily scholars and explorers, their presence has drawn the ire of more aggressive factions like the Scavenger Fleet.

  2. The Scavenger Fleet (Treasure Hunters)

    • Led by Captain Isolde Darktide, the Scavenger Fleet is a band of treasure hunters who have descended upon the Sunken City in search of wealth and magical artifacts. They are mercenaries at heart, and while some members of the fleet have noble intentions, most are driven by greed. The fleet’s ships patrol the waters around Letharion, and they are willing to fight anyone who stands between them and their loot.

  3. The Drowned Court (Spirits of Letharion)

    • The Drowned Court consists of the vengeful spirits of Letharion’s ruling family and their loyal subjects, who were cursed and drowned when the city sank. Now that the city has resurfaced, the Drowned Court haunts the ruins, seeking to punish those who disturbed their rest. These spirits are powerful and dangerous, capable of manipulating the waters around them, and they guard the city’s most valuable treasures.

Notable Locations

  1. The Sunken Palace: The former seat of power in Letharion, the Sunken Palace is a sprawling complex now half-submerged beneath the waves. The palace contains ancient treasures, magical artifacts, and the throne room of the Drowned Court. Those who seek the greatest prizes of Letharion must face the spirits that haunt the palace.

  2. The Abyssal Vault: Located deep beneath the Sunken City, the Abyssal Vault is an ancient chamber where the ruling family once stored powerful magical relics. The vault is guarded by complex magical defenses and has been heavily affected by dimensional rifts. Time and space are unstable within the vault, making it a dangerous place for even the most skilled adventurers.

  3. The Broken Docks: These ancient docks were once the bustling entry point to the city but are now decayed and covered in barnacles. The Scavenger Fleet has taken control of this area, using it as their base of operations while they plunder the ruins. The Riftwalkers have been attempting to negotiate access to the docks, but tensions between the two groups are rising.

  4. The Rifted Depths: The deepest part of the Sunken City, the Rifted Depths are riddled with dimensional rifts that twist reality and unleash dangerous creatures from other realms. Few have dared to explore these depths, but they are rumored to hold the key to understanding both the city’s downfall and the wider dimensional instability plaguing Eltheris.
